Daily Diaries: 4 Love Lessons That Ariana Grande Taught Us In

Breakups can sometimes bring out the worst in us. Be it anger, pain, confusion, and, sometimes, even bitterness, our feelings are at their peak and are often hard to control. But even though we go through such ugly emotional whirlwinds, we can’t hate ourselves for it because we’re only human after all.

So it’s refreshing and quite impressive whenever we see people come out of a breakup with a certain level of composure and maturity. It neither happens overnight nor is an easy feat. This is why these individuals become our role models when it comes to emotional strength.

One of them is Ariana Grande. As a pop superstar, we all know her dating history and all the breakups she’s gone through. From calling it quits with rapper Big Sean and dancer Ricky Alvarez to ending her engagement with comedian Pete Davidson and losing the late musician Mac Miller, Ariana has had her fair share of heartbreaks. But what we admire about her is how she’s come to a point where she has let go of any negative feelings. This is evident in her latest release, entitled “thank u, next,” a song where she conveys her gratitude for everything, both the good and the bad.

Here, we break down the love lessons that our dear Ari has imparted with us through her lyrics.

1. It’s possible to not be bitter over a failed relationship.

Thought I'd end up with Sean
But he wasn't a match
Wrote some songs about Ricky
Now I listen and laugh
Even almost got married
And for Pete, I'm so thankful
Wish I could say, "Thank you" to Malcolm
'Cause he was an angel

Name-dropping in songs is almost always a major shade-throwing move. But that’s not the case here. Even though they are her exes and has ended her relationship with them, Ariana shows no sign of bitterness. Rather, she portrays them with nothing but respect, affection, and gratitude for all the memories she shared with them.

2. It’s all worth it once you learn and grow from the experience.

One taught me love
One taught me patience
And one taught me pain
Now, I'm so amazing
I've loved and I've lost
But that's not what I see

Just because your relationship ended doesn’t mean it’s a failed one. You never really lost if you felt that it was real and you discovered more of yourself through that journey. What matters most is that you learned and grew into a more complete version of yourself. When Ari said, “Now, I’m so amazing,” we totally felt that.

3. Self-love should come first.

I met someone else
We havin' better discussions
I know they say I move on too fast
But this one gon' last
'Cause her name is Ari
And I'm so good with that

Once you’ve realized your worth, then you’ll know that you don’t need anyone else to emotionally depend on. A breakup is actually a great opportunity to nurture self-love. The only relationship you’re going to have with someone else is the one you already have with yourself. So make yourself a priority first. Learn to love yourself, and that’s the only way you can teach others how they should love you.

4. Make sure to go after a love that will last.

One day I'll walk down the aisle...
Only wanna do it once, real bad
Gon' make that sh*t last

After you have met different people and given your heart to them only to be broken multiple times, you’ll then learn what kind of love fits you, the one that will last. Ariana once thought that she’ll tie the knot with Pete but only ended up cutting ties with him. Now, she’s going to make sure that the next person that she’ll give her “Yes” to will be the one she’ll spend her forever with. And that’s the kind of person we should all be looking for.

A sign of maturity is letting go of our petty ways and picking ourselves up with nothing but hope and positivity in our hearts after ending a relationship. Thanks, Ari. Now, we know we’ll turn out amazing, too.

PS. This song is indeed a smash.
